Beaches & Coasts

On the south east side of Corfu, coasts are smooth and waters shallow ideal for swimming just like the small creeks which are optimal for rest and relaxation. There are also the organized beaches of “Benitses”, “Kaiser Bridge”, “Eolos”, “Agios Ioannis Peristeron” and “Moraitika” which are ideal for children and families. Just before the well renowned area of “Kavos” in Lefkimmi, one can find the small fishing village of “Boukari” where a stop for fresh fish is a must.

The western side of the island has the most variations. The northern part, with steep rocky shores and highlight the famous rocks of “Paleokastritsa” is ideal for underwater thrills. The small harbor offers safe mooring and a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Even more south, the landscape softens and has endless golden beaches with turquoise waters. If you are a good swimmer, remember to play with the waves of the south wind in one of them. This area shows no interest for sailing because it does not form curves and is full of shoals.

The northeastern part is suitable for boat trips as it offers easy access to land, warm and calm waters. “Kassiopi” is a picturesque harbor and hosts the boats organizing day trips. A ride to the pier will convince you of the many cruises offered. The part from “Kassiopi” until “Barbati” has intensely embosed and forms numerous bays, ideal for anchorage of any boat. “Agios Stefanos”, “Kouloura”, “Kalami”, “Agni” are just some of the names that you will encounter.

The area from “Sidari” to the peninsula of “Saint Spyridon” is composed mostly from shallow beaches ideal for beginner swimmers and beach games.

The unique beauty of “Paxos” coast is famous throughout the Ionian. The natural harbors of “Lakka”, “Gaios” and “Mongonisi” are packed with yachts during the summer months. The value of those marinas grows the days that Mistral blows and the Paxos canal along with the area’s microclimate, favors currents and waves. The western side of the island consists of spectacular cliffs with sea caves to be visited when the weather permits.

Though “Antipaxos” do not offer safe anchorage, the beautiful and famous turquoise beaches of the northeastern coastline are always busy.

Northeast of Corfu are the small islands of “Mathraki”, “Othonoi” and “Erikousa”. The first is surrounded by reefs and shoals and is highly inaccessible, so it is the most forgotten. The other two, however, are the first stop for boats coming from the Adriatic Sea and are generating traffic. The steep shores attract lovers of wildlife.
